What is Urology?
Urology is a surgical specialty which deals
with diseases of the urinary/reproductive tracts in men and with urinary disease
in women. There is a small amount of overlap with other specialties such as
gynaecology, genitourinary medicine, reproductive medicine and nephrology
(medical kidney disease). Although I am a surgeon, only some 25% of patients
referred to me by GPs actually require surgery so, if you are referred, this
does not necessarily mean you will automatically be advised to have an
operation; many urological conditions can be dealt with by simple, medical
means.
